Cake with a cause | Afternoon tea with RGU & Drugs Action

Usually you don't see me do a 'follow' up post of sorts when it comes to an Aberdeen event. In fact you're more likely to see me Tweeting, gramming or Facebooking during an event, but this one in particular deserves a very special mention.

As you know from my previous post me and my blogging gal pal Anastasia from Natbees attended a cake off and afternoon tea, hosted by the events management students of RGU in aid of local charity Drugs Action. Not only were we thoroughly entertained by the cake off competition and of course fed to the point of exhaustion (really guys when I got home, I napped!) we were treated to a sensory experience, laughed out loud at more than one cheeser of a joke from our host, enjoyed a fun game of bingo and took part in a raffle that had a tonne of fantastic prizes!

This event itself raised over £1,500 for Drugs Action, and rightfully so, the event went seamlessly an everyone in attendance, including us, had a fantastic afternoon! All I can really say is that as we discovered the event was part of the RGU students event management course brief, we sincerely hope these students are given an A++ for their attention to detail and seamless running of a fantastic Aberdeen event!

Until next time folks, having my cake and eating it too!

Cake with a Cause | Easter Cake Off with RGU & Drugs Action

Eat cake for a good cause? I'm there with bells on and my fork at the ready, and that's just what the Aberdeen public have in store at the Easter Cake Off in association with RGU and local charity Drugs Action on the 19th of March at The Park Cafe, Hazlehead!

Not only are we going to be able to have our cake and eat it too, but those with a bit of Berry skills in their baking will get a chance to show off their talents all in the name of charity! There will be a bake off style cake competition with the 'show stopper cake' winning the grand prize! But if you're like me and you're more boozy in the kitchen than berry, don't worry there's something for you too. Whether you're looking to entertain the kids for the weekend with an Easter Egg Hunt, looking to relax with your gal pal as I will be doing with a top notch afternoon tea, or even if you're just looking for a day out then why not come along?

If you do fancy yourself as a bit of a Mary Berry or heck let's not be sexist, a Paul Hollywood, then get in touch to enter your cake in the comp by emailing rguevents.da@gmail.com, or you know get in touch with me and I'd be more than happy to judge your cake bake skills! Hurry up and book your tickets here though, they're selling like hot cakes (sorry guys I had to!)

Of course I'd love to see you along there, drop on by if you have the chance and come say hi to me and my very own gal pal, Anastasia of Natbees, we'll be the ladies of leisure with our tea and cream cakes!

Until next time folks, scone anyone?

#KeepTheBan | Save the hunting act

Hello everyone, so today I just wanted to share a quick post today on a petition I have signed by change.org regarding the #KeepTheBan hashtag. As I'm sure those of you in Britain are all aware we are facing an animal welfare crisis in the UK at the moment with members of parliament attempting to abolish the Hunting Act therefore legalising fox hunting. As I'm writing this today you have until tomorrow to express your support, ring your local MP, sign the online petition here or demonstrate your support by helping the #KeepTheBan hastag trending. You have until tomorrow (Wednesday the 15th of July) to sign this petition, please do if you think fox hunting is a barbaric and outdated activity that really ought to be a public issue.

Aberdeen Events | Colour Me Rad 5K

Hello everyone, I'm back with another Aberdeen event announcement that I am pleased to report I will be attending and taking part in with one of my nearest and dearests and that is the Colour Me Rad 5K Run.

As I understnad Colour Me Rad have been around for quite a while now, taking their events all over the UK and inspiring similar events all over the world but we have never had one take place in Aberdeen until this year and I am super excited to be a part of it (although due to popular demand I almost wasn't!) The basic premise behind the run is a celebration of colour, positivity and fitness, unlike other 5K runs, Colour Me Rad fire off blazes of colour canons, colour bombs and mortar at intervals throughout, decorating your city (as well as your clothes, hair, face and everything else) with all the colours of the rainbow.

Registration cost £20 and with that you get a tshirt, a pair of 'rad' sunglasses, a temporary tattoo and a colour bomb (received at the end of the run) to throw at your friends and family to spread some colour and joy (although if someone cuts me off or is rude they may get this in the fizog) A portion of the proceeds go to a local charity in each location and in Aberdeen's case this is Northsound's Cash For Kids. This years race takes part on the 6th of June at the Beach Boulevard, and if this sounds like something you're interested in attending be sure to book your place ASAP as spaces are selling fast!

In the past I have taken part  in many runs, races and 10K runs but none like this, and I am really looking forward to it on the day if it isn't raining of course then it's just like that sad bit in Mary Poppin's where Bert's chalk drawings wash away! For more information and dates for Colour Me Rad visit their website.

Until next time folks, colouring myself rad!

Doing Your Bit | Cyrenians Aberdeen Rucksack Project 2014

This is another special post which as you'll notice has not been posted on my usual Wednesday or Sunday but I feel it deserves a slot all on it's own as it's a cause that ought to be close to our hearts given we see this cause when we are simply walking down our high street on a daily basis!

As you'll have possibly seen in my previous post I always try and do a little something for the various charities in and around Aberdeen on an annual basis. This year I took part in the bare face selfie (don't worry you won't have to look at my made under face again for a while!) I ran the Baker Hughes 10K for local Aberdeen animal charity Mrs Murrays Cat and Dog Home and I also took part in the annual Race for Life 10K with my mum.

So with Christmas coming up and this being the most difficult time for those less fortunate I have been looking for something to do to help locally as I always feel charity begins at home (or at least your local high street) and my friend has recently started working alongside local Aberdeen homeless charity the Cyrenians who help the homeless and less fortunate around Aberdeen City.
I must say Cyrenians themselves are not hosting this particular charity event I'm about to talk about but the cause is one and the same, it is called the 'Rucksack Challenge' Basically they are asking people to fill a rucksack (funnily enough) with items that could help the homeless through the harsh winter we seem to be in for.

The challenge is taking place on the 6th of December and they are looking for as many people to get involved as possible, and the task you have to complete is so so simple and you can actually do this with most items from your own home, so no rushing out to buy things, it is incredibly cost effective and not to mention charitable.

How to get involved:
Simply fill a rucksack of essentials which would help the homeless make it through the harsh winters and stay warm this winter, then show up to the event on the 6th of December and hand it over.

They are looking for everything from warm clothing, to easily heated foods, torches, ponchos, blankets, first aid kits, sleeping bags and even winter boots, no contribution is too big or too small.  As long as the items that you donate are usable and in reasonable condition then they're a huge help.

If you'd like a little more information about the Rucksack Project Aberdeen and the items which would be useful for donating then click here or if you'd like to know a bit more about the Cyrenians then please click here

Over the last couple of weeks I have been looking out a few bits and bobs to hand over on the day so if this has at all inspired you to get involved or maybe theres another charity event you're already contributing towards then I salute you and be sure to leave a comment below on what you're involved in or would like to become a bit more involved in. Hope to see some of you fellow Aberdonians there on the day!

Thank you for taking the time to have a wee read of this, of course drop  a comment below if you are coming along on the day or if there is something similar in your area, as always you can catch me on Twitter or to keep up with the latest, find me on Bloglovin.

Until next time folks.

#Nomakeupselfie | Doing Your Bit

Hello everyone, so a week has passed since the #nomakeupselfiefor cancer swept the social media sphere throughout the UK at least, and if you don't know what I'm yapping about, where have you been?

Not only were those of you who took to the internets snapping pics of your faces au naturale, the majority I could see were even donating generously raising over a staggering £8m in a little over a week AND COUNTING for Cancer Research! As a PR and Communication student I was incredibly impressed that a campaign like this has had such an effect and it just goes to show the power we hold as internet users and social media sharers!

So today I would like to share with you what I plan on doing in aid of various charities this year.

(The first time I have appeared au naturale on the line, feeling good for charity)

Race for Life 10K
Last year my friend and I took part in another event in aid of cancer, one I'm sure you're all familiar with, the Race for Life 10k. For all of you ladies out there who have yet to participate in the Race for Life 5 or 10K run, it is a fantastic atmosphere where there is a real community sense and it a lot of fun. Being healthy and helping charity is a great boost and we were eventually able to raise over £200.00 to help beat cancer!

Baker Hughes 10K
This one is a race that is a little different and one more specific to Aberdeen over a UK wide run. It is called the Baker Hugues Running Festival and is not held for a specific charity but rather participants are given the opportunity to choose a charity which is close to them personally. So I intend to run for either a heart disease charity or lung disease as these are causes closer to my family which I always feel go unnoticed by the media. I have never taken part in the Baker Hughes Running Festival before but I am really pleased to be able to run for a cause which I have chosen myself.

Unfortunately this is all I have planned for my Summer sponsor activities, the Baker Hughes 10K is in May and the Race for Life in June, so I've given myself a bit of a challenge here but I am determined to raise over £100.00 per run, if you are feeling so inclined and generous this evening here is my Just Giving page for the Race for Life 10K.

What do you guys do for charity, and are there any specifically close to your hearts? Drop me a comment below, come chat with me on Twitter or if you'd like to keep up with the latest Granite City posts follow this blog on Bloglovin.

Stay generous everyone
H. Elizabeth
